What makes this course different?

Why do smart, talented people struggle to negotiate?

Most people can learn about rational negotiation strategies by reading a book like Getting to Yes, or Never Split the Difference. But they still struggle to put it into practice. That's why this course covers negotiation theory, and helps you tackle the 'irrational' factors that get in the way of executing the rational strategy:👉 Practice: Realistic briefs, with room for feedback & experimentation
👉 Personalisation: Use self-diagnostics to map your natural style
👉 Process: Learn a process to manage end-to-end negotiations

Meet your instructor, Lucy Wark

Lucy Wark
Founder @ NORMAL
Ex-Mckinsey

Lucy studied business & social sciences at Cambridge & the University of Chicago, where she was introduced to negotiation theory: the perfect intersection of her favourite topics! She began her career serving corporate & government clients at McKinsey & Company, before launching the pioneering Australian sexual wellness brand NORMAL, and negotiating a successful exit from its venture-backed parent company, Eucalyptus, in 2022.A word from Lucy:"Learning to negotiate was a huge unlock for me - especially working in male-dominated fields, where the ‘gender negotiation gap’ can compound existing inequalities.I was once described as negotiating "like a Russian accountant" by the (Russian accountant) who just hired me, which I wear as a badge of honour. But seriously - I'm really glad I learned to advocate for myself, and my company. This course, Negotiation II, is designed for people negotiating for their organisations - whether it’s a fundraise, a big partnership, an important contract, a key hire or a company sale, it’s about mastering this essential skill before the stakes are really high.Think of Negotiation I (our other course) as the perfect introduction to negotiating for yourself as an individual contributor - there’s no knowledge assumed, but you’ll come out feeling confident to negotiate job offers, raises, promotions & other conditions.”

Why learn to negotiate?

  • Understand the hidden logic of negotiation

Learn negotiation theory to help you analyse the issues, plan strategies and handle different styles of negotiator.

  • Negotiation is an essential 'meta skill'

A huge number of work situations are negotiations in disguise. From project management and roadmaps, to hiring, promotions, partnerships, fundraises, contracts, sales and more - as your company and career progresses, negotiation is the critical meta-skill that underpins high performance in a number of areas.

  • It takes time to find a style that works for you

The best negotiators don’t match the stereotype of aggressive fist-banging and table-flipping - and everyone can build on their strengths to be a strong negotiator with good training.

Lots of resources give one-size-fits-all advice, but understanding how our personalities, backgrounds & experiences shape our instincts - and managing how we self-sabotage - is essential.

  • Get results and maintain relationships

Very few negotiations of significant value occur in a zero-sum, one-off vacuum - but most people struggle to apply negotiation theory in contexts where they need to maintain the relationship.Learn how to find win-wins, manage difficult personalities and strengthen your rapport - all while getting a great outcome.

  • Huge 'return on investment' for your organisation

Negotiation is the ‘leverage’ that helps you capture the benefits of your efforts in building great products & operations - and not learning how to negotiate can be incredibly costly in the long term.

  • Negotiation is a 'muscle'

Reading or streaming negotiation advice is very different to putting it into practice - good negotiators develop their style by combining theory with practice, experimentation & feedback.

  • Replace your anxiety with a proven process

Many individual contributors approach negotiations reactively, or avoid negotiations due to anxiety.Learn a process you can apply to analysing, preparing and responding throughout every negotiation in your role.

Reviews from our past students

Albert Patajo
Principal @ Astral Ventures
"Must-do course for any investors, founders or operators in decision making roles. Lucy arms you with the knowledge and experience for any startup or investing negotiation. Through the course you'll learn a toolkit for negotiations and apply it to relevant exercises and scenarios. I'd encourage any in venture or startups to do it!"

Danielle Higgs
Chief of Staff @ TenantCS
"A brilliant balance of theory, practice, introspection and discussion in a safe and fun space. Highly recommended."

Ed Gregory
Legal Counsel @ Airtree Ventures
"The most valuable outcome for me was becoming more intentional and deliberate in my negotiations. Previously, I'd mainly negotiated instinctively and reactively. Now I'm more conscious of negotiating personas, how to prepare systematically and effectively, and the ways to manage the progress of negotiations, and have the resources and processes to do so."

Ella Clarke
Founder @ Friendly
"Lucy successfully made a group of strangers feels safe and supported by one another. She is a natural facilitator, and I loved turning up to challenge myself with her. I’ll definitely be on the lookout for more Minnow courses!"

Mitch Lukasz
Head of Operations @ Cars24
"I didn't know what to expect coming into the course, however, I was engaged from the first session. The practice negotiations Lucy developed forced us out of our comfort zones to experiment with new styles, and the sessions provided a safe space to do so. The guest Q&A speakers were engaging and from a range of industries where they could share diverse experiences. Our entire cohort felt engaged and invested in maximising their learning and this showed in the professional and enthusiastic approach on display."
